The helicopter enables surveys to be made quickly over any terrain, irrespective of its morphology. By using the DTM together with images collected at the same time as the laser data, it is possible to classify pylons, transformer stations and calculate catenaries.
The safety zone around cables and pylons can also be determined from the DTM.
It is a valuable tool in the analysis of power load optimisation and the planning of routine maintenance from a safety perspective.

Remotely sensed data which is geo-referenced and can be integrated with GIS systems can also be used to calculate models showing the distribution of electromagnetic fields around power lines situated close to inhabited areas.
